English Civil War

JOINT CRISIS

It is 1641. For the last decade, England has been governed by the personal rule of Charles I, dissatisfied with Parliamentary opposition to his policies. Parliament, governed mainly by minor nobles, despise Charles for his autocratic tendencies, marriage to a French princess, and suspected Catholic sympathies. But having constitutional control over tax revenues, their role cannot be ignored for long. The outbreak of an expensive war between England and Scotland finally forced Charles’s hand, and, in need of money, he has recalled Parliament.

As the 1640 Parliament assembles in November, tensions are high. The incensed Parliament demands limits to Charles’s royal powers, something he cannot tolerate. And as 1640 rolls to 1641, the country lurches on the brink of civil war. All it takes is one wrong decision for the history of England and the British Isles to change forever. Where it goes depends on you.
